Sword-wielding man who attacked Ottawa cop sentenced to jail

It was anything but a regular Sunday shift for Ottawa Police Constable Kellan Moore and the other officers who responded to 911 calls about a “crazy” man, in the throes of a hard-drug induced psychosis, walking down Ogilvie Road on April 4, 2021 at 3:25 in the morning with a sword in his hand.

When the sword-wielding attacker came around after surgery, he was charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

But his lawyer, Oliver Abergel, was able to negotiate a guilty plea to the lesser offence of assault of a peace officer with a weapon.

The judge said defence lawyer Oliver Abergel was a “credit” to his client for the effort in negotiations for a lesser offence, and Wadden also thanked Assistant Crown Attorney Malcolm Salvage for his “thorough” work on the case.
