COVID-19 outbreak gains speed as two new patients in Ottawa confirmed

The number of people under investigation for COVID-19 has also climbed in Ontario, to 939 from 580. The results of those tests were still pending.

The province reported Saturday afternoon that the coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19, continued to gain speed in Ontario.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 jumped to 98 from 74 in a single day. Another five infected people have recovered from the disease.

In Toronto, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones announced late Friday that criminals sentenced to intermittent sentences served on weekends would not have to go into custody. Instead, they’ll be required to report to their regular jails, where they would be given temporary absence passes and allowed to return home.

What’s more, all personal visits to the province’s adult correctional facilities, including the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, have been suspended.

Ottawa defence lawyer Michael Spratt this past week called for all non-violent prisoners to be released from provincial jails. Spratt said the jails were ideal places for the spread of the virus. “Jails are already ill suited to deal with health issues: People will die,” Spratt warned on Twitter.
